More and more people are enrolling for online education classes every year, but there are also many diploma mills that offer bogus online college education.

Getting a college education is a major investment, and most students take years to pay off their students loans, so students need to research their options, before they sign up for an online college degree program.

Look for accredited colleges

Check the credentials of the educational institutions you are considering and ensure that they are accredited. See if they are listed on U.S. Department of Education Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

The US Department of Education does not accredit educational institutions or programs, but it publishes a list of recognized accrediting agencies, and a database of accredited postsecondary institutions and programs.

Many fake online schools provide degrees on the basis of "life experience," instead of classroom or online teaching. Traditional schools may not agree to transfer credits from these fake schools.

Several traditional universities, which are fully accredited, are now offering online degree programs, and there is no need for students to join fake institutions that offer degrees with little or no value.

Employers may not recognize these degrees and may even form a bad opinion of you, if you add them to your resume.

Some reputed schools offering online college education

Cornell University, which is one of the top-20 universities in the United States, has established an online learning company named eCornell, which offers comprehensive professional and executive development programs.

These programs are developed by the faculty of Cornell University, and are in the areas of financial management, strategy, leadership and management development, hospitality management and human resources.

The University College of Syracuse University offers undergraduate and graduate credit courses that can be completed entirely online. These courses can be used towards degree programs at Syracuse University and other schools.

The University College offers degree and certificate programs in a range of flexible course formats. Working adults can earn their associate, bachelor's, or master's degrees, part-time.

Online college education is enabling more and more working adults to get a college degree, but they need to shop around and check the credentials of the educational institutions they are considering, to avoid getting scammed by diploma mills.
