Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University, in Norfolk, is one of Virginia's premier institutions of higher learning. It was founded in 1930, as a Division of the College of William and Mary. It has grown over the years and is now one of the 101 public universities with a Carnegie / Doctoral Research - Extensive distinction.

Although it is situated in a metropolitan area, Old Dominion offers a small college atmosphere. It has a mix of old and new buildings, tree-lined walkways, gardens and ponds.

Old Dominion University offers 67 undergraduate, 68 graduate, 26 doctoral and 2 educational specialist degree programs. Many of these programs are nationally ranked.

The faculty and students have received many awards, including Virginia Professor of the Year, Virginia Scientist of the Year, Fulbright Scholar, Rhodes Scholar, Truman Fellow and USA Today Academic All-American.

Academic Programs

Undergraduate programs that meet national standards of excellence are offered in a wide range of subjects. Graduate Degree Programs and Ph.D. programs are offered by various colleges at the Old Dominion University.

The Career Advantage Program offered by the Career Management Center allows students to gain work experience related to their major. Continuing education programs are offered by the College of Business and Public Administration.

Undergraduate students can opt for interdisciplinary clusters, or focus areas, to meet their upper-level general education requirement. The traditional discipline-based "minors" also remain an option for them.

The university allows you to earn college-level academic credits at the undergraduate and graduate levels, through work, self study and life experience. Prior learning can be assessed through portfolio development, departmental exams, external exams, credit for training, performance assessment, etc.

Distance Learning

Old Dominion University has been involved in distance learning programs, delivered by technology, since the mid -1980s. The TELETECHNET distance learning network consists of nearly 50 locations throughout Virginia, Washington State, Arizona, the Bahamas, and ships of the US Navy deployed all over the world.

In the past, the course delivery was via synchronous interactive satellite, but now other modes of delivery have also been adopted. These include the Internet, two-way video, CD-ROM and streaming video.

The programs offered through distance learning include Undergraduate Majors, Undergraduate Minors, Graduate Programs and Certificate Programs, in a wide range of subjects.
