Oakland Community College is the largest of Michigan's 28 community colleges. It operates from five campuses and serves more than 46,000 credit and non-credit students. Four out of the five campuses are the size of an average community college in the rest of the country.
More than 11% of the High School Graduates in Oakland County attend the college. The college has the largest freshman class in the state and the third largest undergraduate enrolment, after The University of Michigan and Michigan State University. It has one of the highest transfer rates, among all Michigan community colleges.
Oakland Community College has the state's largest English as a Second language, Nursing and Workforce Development programs and 100% of the Nursing graduates pass the state licensure exam.
Students can also opt for Service Learning projects and incorporate community service into their classes, as an extra credit option or actual assignment. This may also help students to get a grant, as well as recognition.
Oakland Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Many of its programs have individual accreditations from state agencies and/or national associations or organizations.
For example, the Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and the Radiologic technology Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
The College is also a member of the American Association of Community Colleges, the Consortium for Community College Development, the Design and Manufacturing Alliance, the Oakland Literacy Council, etc.
Oakland Community College offers a range of distance learning opportunities to students, who want an alternative to traditional on-campus classes. Some online courses are offered with no requirement for on-campus classes, while others require some on-campus sessions.
Distance learning programs are a boon for non-traditional adult learners, who lack the time and inclination to attend on-campus classes. They can add a recognized degree from an accredited institution to their career portfolios, without sacrificing their work or family lives.
The college uses the Blackboard and Educator Course Management Systems (CMS) for distance learning programs. Students can log onto both Blackboard and Educator by means of their Online Services User IDs and passwords.
Classroom/online courses are traditional courses with an online component, which incorporate the mandatory use of the College's online Course Management System. Students are required to meet in person in a classroom as per the schedule and are provided with a user ID and password to access the course sites.
Students can also join Telecourses, which are video-based courses that include periodic on-campus sessions and the use of a text and study guides. Videotapes are available for check-out at the assigned campus library by enrolled students.
