Distance Learning X Ray Technician

There is a growing need for distance learning x ray technician programs. X ray technicians are also known as a radiologic technologists or radiographers. They are responsible for making x ray images of different parts of a patient's body.

Employers prefer to hire x ray technicians who have received formal training in universities, colleges, vocational-technical institutes, hospitals and the armed forces. Online x ray technician programs may not provide the necessary clinical experience.

You may also have to obtain a state license or certification from the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists). The ARRT tests and certifies radiologic technologists. It administers the ethics requirements for the annual registration of x ray technicians, as well as their continuing education.

To be eligible for certification by the ARRT, you will have to complete an educational program accredited by the JRCERT (Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology). You also have to pass the national examination of the ARRT. A distance learning x ray technician course may not help you to get ARRT certification.

Training to be an X Ray Technician

Formal training programs in radiography range from one year to four years. They lead to a certificate, an associate degree, or a bachelor's degree. Two-year associate degrees are the most popular. It is preferable to join a formal training program in radiography.

There are separate listings of accredited educational programs on the ARRT website for Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiography, Radiation Therapy, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Sonography. A distance learning x ray technician course may not have as much value in the job market, as an accredited, formal training course.

Accredited Courses for X Ray Technicians

The Medical Careers Institute has campuses in Newport News, VA, Virginia Beach, VA and Richmond, VA. It allows you to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Radiography, in 18 months. Graduates are eligible to appear for the ARRT exam.

St. Vincent Health has 16 hospitals serving 45 counties. It is dedicated to improving the lives and health of the people of Indiana. St. Vincent Health / St. Joseph Hospital offer a 22-month, full-time Radiography Program that is fully accredited by the JRCERT.

It is preferable to do a formal on-campus course that qualifies you to appear for the ARRT exam, rather than a distance learning x ray technician course that may not have as much value.
