Distance Learning Seminaries

Distance learning seminaries offer courses in the Bible, theology, ethics, pastoral ministry, religion and service in contemporary society. Seminary courses and programs are also available in old testament, new testament, church history, systematic theology, apologetics and practical theology.

Some seminaries offer subjects like worship and the arts, history, feminist theology, pastoral care, educational ministries, spirituality, and multicultural studies. Seminaries prepare students for leadership and ministry roles in context with religious issues.

Many distance learning seminaries are available for the students who wish to pursue seminary studies but cannot attend classes on campus. Distance learning courses offer audio-programmed independent study courses.

Taped lectures are supplemented by a syllabus, study questions and bibliography under the guidance of a faculty member. Students can apply either online or on paper.

Checklist before enrollment

Before enrollment students should go through the accreditation details of the distance learning seminaries. Accreditation is a certification issued by an authoritative agency that an academic institution provides an education, which meets certain established standards of quality.

Some authoritative agencies recognized by the US Department of Education are United Church of Christ and The Association of Theological Schools.

Distance learning courses are available for the MDiv, MTS and DMin and the MA degree. College credit programs include a Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies, Associate of Biblical Studies, and a Certificate of Biblical Studies.

A variety of adult credit programs and the independent study programs are also available. Seminary degree programs cannot be taken completely by distance learning.

Credit varies from university to university for distance learning courses. The credits that a student receives through independent studies are easily transferable between programs. So, a student should make proper inquiries before enrollment.

Some special distance learning seminaries

Hartford Seminary supports faithful living in a multi-faith environment. It houses the Hartford Institute for Religion Research and the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations.
