College Loan Bad Credit: You Can Still Pay For College

If you need a college loan bad credit, there is no need to despair. Students with bad credit can raise money from a range of different sources, including federal and private loans.

Try to maximize your entitlement for finance from all other sources, like grants and scholarships, which don't have to be paid back. You can also try to get loans from relatives, or try to get a job, which will help you to earn your way through college.

Ask family members with good credit if they will agree to act as co-signers or co-borrowers. This is an easy way to get a student loan, with a low interest rate and favorable terms, even if you have bad credit.

Federal student loans

Federal student loans are a good option for those who have bad credit, because many of them are not based on the borrower's credit rating.

The popular federal Stafford loans are not provided on the basis of credit ratings, because it is assumed that students who are just out of high school will not have credit ratings.

Federal Perkins loans, which are provided to the neediest students, also don't take their credit ratings into account. However, students who have defaulted on federal student loans in the past may have a problem getting one of these loans.

Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to apply for federal Stafford loans and federal Perkins loans.

If you have bad credit, you can apply for a federal PLUS loan, if your parents have better credit than you. PLUS loans are granted to parents, rather than the students and this may help to solve your bad credit problems.

Non-traditional adult students, who have bad credit, can first apply for federal loans, because no credit checks are required. They can also try to obtain financial aid from their employers, state, county and city.

Private student loans

If you are not able to obtain a federal student loan, you can still apply for a private student loan. Students, who are planning to pursue a program in a field that has high earning potential, stand a better chance of securing a private college loan bad credit.

Even if you can only get a college loan bad credit from a private lender at a very high interest rate, you may not have to start making repayments until you graduate.

You may be able to improve your credit rating, by the time you graduate, and can explore ways to consolidate your student loan at a lower interest rate.

Don't lose hope, if you have bad credit and need a college loan. You can still find ways to get a college loan bad credit, to get that college degree that will help you to get ahead in the career of your dreams.
